A Cool Catholic

Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
~ Matthew 5:16

I considered myself to be an extremely cool girl. My definition of cool may however surprise you. I loved to swear just in an attempt to fit into my friend circle. I loved gossiping about people and used to condemn them with my words all the time. My mom wasn’t in favour of my friend circle one bit, but being the rebel that I was, I didn’t really care.

I went through a major break up in 2012 and it was during that bad phase that I got close to a few people from the CFCI Singles community in Mumbai, who helped me realise that my behaviour and speech didn’t befit a child of God. As I interacted with them, I found that they had something in them that I desperately needed.

With a lot of cajoling and convincing, I joined the community only to realise what exactly it meant to be cool- the real way, the true way! My formator Jerson James was a major source of inspiration to me, and helped me change my way of thinking. It was definitely not an overnight transformation but I can see for myself how things have changed in my life and it is certainly a wonderful feeling.

I have learnt to surrender every small detail of my life to Jesus. Reading the word of God daily is something that gives me great strength. Reciting the Marian and Divine Mercy rosary has gone a long way in giving me grace to overcome my weaknesses.

My whole outlook towards life and people has changed. I rarely, if ever, swear now. I don’t involve myself in gossip, but rather try my best to stay away from it. I am no longer diplomatic, trying to please others, but rather, I am much more straightforward and I believe this has helped improve my relationship with others. People in my office now know me as the one who has just one true God – Jesus and no one else. I try my best to be a true witness to people around me, something that I never bothered to work on before.

Jesus found me during the lowest point in my life and gave me the opportunity through this community to get back to Him. I feel so blessed to be a part of His kingdom. He is the best thing that has happened to me and now, I can proudly say that I am a Catholic and I’m loving it!
