“Amkam xokti diunk Jezu asa” Fil.4:13
“I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength” Phil 4:13
I have been a part of the community of CFCI for a while now, and through it, I have experienced unity, love and a great desire to serve people. I would like to share with you about this aspect of service and the zeal that God has given me to carry out his mission of reaching out to the poor, in the flesh.
Many years ago, one of our brothers from the community was sent home from Goa Medical College, as they could not offer him the necessary treatment over there. He had massive wounds on his legs and they were infested with maggots; hence even his family members did not accept him at home. At this point in time I felt compassion for him and so, along with a few of my brothers from the community, took him to a private doctor in Varca for treatment. The doctor agreed to treat him and began by scraping the badly infested skin of his legs, after which he proceeded to clean and treat the wounds. Thereafter, his wounds began to heal and we put him in an Old Age Home and for many years he was able to lead a normal life
Another similar incident occurred, wherein an old couple was bed-ridden in a flat where they were residing and nobody was ready to take care of them. When I visited them along with a few of my brothers from the community, we were shocked to see their condition. Maggots were moving over their entire bodies and even on the bed. The site was an utterly disgusting one, but we asked God to give us the strength to carry out all that we needed to do in that situation. We washed and cleaned their bodies, swept and disinfected the place, changed the bed sheets and rid the place of all the maggots. God gave us the grace that we required and as a result, this old couple was able to spend the rest of their days comfortably.
Another incident that took place a little while ago comes to mind. A brother from the neighborhood who lived along with his old mother was really sick for the past 3 years. None of us knew about his condition until one of our sisters from the community informed us about his illness. We heard that nobody was ready to look after him, so a few of us from the CFCI community decided to pay him a visit. On arrival, as the door was opened, there was such a foul odour emanating from the room, that even after covering our noses and mouths we couldn’t bear to remain there. We realized that his current condition was because he hadn’t received any treatment for a long time and no one took care of him. His legs were rotten and covered in maggots; however his upper body was in a good condition.
I said, “Brother we will pray for you“. He replied furiously, “I am angry with God“. We said
“But God is not angry with you, He loves you. Jesus took all our sins and suffering upon his own body when he died on the cross so that we may turn away from our sins and come back to our God”. 1 Peter 2:24
We prayed with him and told him that we would take care of all the treatment required by him.
We informed the Health Centre about this matter and they came immediately, however they returned back because they could not bear the stench. Later, we dialed 108, the emergency response service in order to procure an ambulance to take him to the hospital. They arrived promptly as well, but once again no one was willing to come near him. Finally two of us decided to carry him down to the ambulance. It took more than half an hour for us to take him down from the 1st floor of the building and we cannot explain how we managed to do that especially with the foul odour emanating from his body, so much so that by the end of it, we felt that the odour had been absorbed by our bodies.
He was immediately admitted to Hospicio (Govt. Hospital), where because of the bad odour which kept spreading, people began to move far away. An assistant at the hospital took us to a corner and asked us to remove the cloth that was tied around his legs.
Three days later he was sent to Goa Medical College, Bambolim. Once again no one was ready to undertake the task of shifting him from the ambulance, so we had to do it.
He was taken to the Emergency Ward, and there as well we had to remove the cloth bandage from his legs. By the grace of God, we found a good doctor who was willing to attend to him. After examining him, he declared that his condition was so bad that one of his legs would have to be amputated.
After admitting him, we required an attendant to stay with him and requested around 20 different people, however nobody was ready even after offering them extra money. Finally after a long and arduous search we found someone who agreed. Praise be to God that his condition also began to improve and he is now on the road to recovery.
Looking back at all of these situations, none of us on our own strength would have been able to do all that we did. Not even if someone offered us money. But Jesus was with us and that is why we had enough strength to bear it all.
Without Jesus we would not be able to do anything. Jezu Viret amchean kainch korunk zaunchem naslem .
