The Grace to Love

One fine morning, my close friend suddenly stopped talking to me. I tried asking her but she never said why. She’s a non-catholic, tomboy, atheist and acts very hard hearted at times. She’s the centre of everyone’s attraction but since we weren’t speaking, I kept my distance from her and the group and hence felt really lonely and left out. This went on for 3 months.

During this time, I attended an inner healing retreat where I lifted up all the pain and misunderstanding to the Lord and by the grace of God, I was able to forgive her. I was filled with an unexplainable peace and I felt extremely happy, I did not know why but I was sure that Lord was going to work in this friendship.

The next day in college, I felt no anger towards her. I was just filled with a deep joy. I went straight up to her and we spoke, joked and laughed just like before. Throughout the day, everyone, including her kept asking me, “What’s wrong with you. Why are you so happy?

That evening she offered to drop me home and on the way she asked me whether I had fallen in love. I said yeah! And I told her of my wonderful experience at the retreat and how the Lord had filled me with his love and joy. I also told her how lonely it was without her company and how I had forgiven her.

As I mentioned before, she’s a non catholic and an atheist and so I prayed to the Holy Spirit to give me the courage to talk about Jesus to her. As I spoke, I realized that this was the first time she didn’t laugh when I spoke about God. When I reached home, she texted saying that it was really nice speaking to me after a long time and she thanked me for forgiving her. I had tears in my eyes when I read this but I was glad that I could share the joy of the Lord with her.

I learnt that being a Christian isn’t only about doing great things (Yes, we are called to do great things) but it is in sharing what the Lord has blessed us with – like the spirit of generosity, patience, joy, love and happiness with everyone around that we show others what a Superrrr Lord we have!!

As Mother Teresa said,

“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”
