God fulfils the Desires of your Heart

Luke 6:38 – “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

When I became a mother, I quit my job because I had told my husband that I wanted to dedicate my time to our children. From then, I started to identify myself as a mother, wife and a homemaker. But somewhere along the way I started to feel that I had lost my ‘status’ in the society because I was just a “homemaker”.

As I remained consistent in my prayer life, I quite often especially, in the past recent days, felt the Lord impressing on my heart that I needed to evangelize. And I had a desire in my heart to reach out to people because I wanted to testify God’s amazing work in my life. But as I considered myself just a “homemaker”, I thought this meant I was supposed to evangelize to my family, i.e. look after the spiritual well being of my husband and children and maybe be a witness to the people I met occasionally.

It was around this time that people in the community were asked to volunteer for the North-East Mission. My husband told me that he had volunteered to serve in the missions and I was glad that he decided to serve and encouraged him. That week when I was doing my personal prayer, I was reminded again of the North East mission and I sensed God saying

‘How much more clear can I be? Here’s your opportunity to reach out to my people.’

But I couldn’t bring myself to think that God was asking me to serve with two small children of mine. My daughter Joanna was 2 years old and my son Jordan was 6 months old at that time. As I continued to keep this in my prayer, I was convinced within a week’s time that God was calling me to serve in the North East Mission. So I informed my husband and he supported my decision. A lot of others voiced out their concerns about taking our children along but we believed that nothing is impossible for our God. And thus began the preparations for talks and testimonies in Hindi.

I was a part of the North-East mission from 4th May to 30th May and was excited to serve God along with my husband, children, and in-laws. And from all the sharing’s I had heard, I offered my fears of the unknown to the Lord as I started off my journey to Tinsukia in Assam, Alipurduar in West Bengal and Rourkela in Orissa.

Now my next doubt was how as a married woman I would be able to connect with the youth. But every place we visited, the youth were around my age and comfortable talking to me. The Lord helped me to connect well with them, as I served in all these three places in whatever capacity I could. And true to our belief, Joanna and Jordan enjoyed more than we did and the Lord kept them safe throughout.

1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain”

If I thought God called me to evangelize, I answered his call and it ended there, I was wrong. I received more in return for my spiritual growth as well. Out of the many experiences I had, few stood out for me:

  1. Most of our wants are to have a proper toilet, bathroom with a door, good meals especially for children, excellent education, but these are luxuries for the people in these villages and so I learnt I need to be grateful for every small thing that I am blessed with.
  2. People in these places get to participate in the Eucharist Celebration once in 2- 3 months before which the entire village goes for confessions. I learnt that I need to value sacraments especially the Eucharist and the sacrament of reconciliation and make use of the convenience to receive them as often as possible.
  3. Youth in Assam were asked to prepare and conduct an intake camp in a day’s time. None of them hesitated or had excuses despite some of them being uneducated. They all had queries on how things were supposed to be done since some were conducting the camp for the first time. However, they were excited and prepared themselves for the programme. I learnt from them to be enthusiastic to serve God always and not complain.

I am slowly and steadily trying to put all that I have learnt into practice. I no more feel that I am just a “homemaker” because I am trying to be everything that God wants me to be and it’s a wonderful start.

Psalm 37:4”Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart

The Lord has been faithful in fulfilling the desire of my heart to reach out to people, not just through the mission but even after returning from the mission. He has provided me ample of opportunities to serve Him in the Mangalore Community and I have said “YES” to his call, knowing that every time I serve I grow closer to Him and He is gradually revealing His heart to me and teaching me to be more like Him. Amen.

Matthew 6:33 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well
