This is my strange and completely true story…
New Year’s 2015
“Take me to church…”
It wasn’t a prayer or a request but the lingering lyrics of a song I had heard the previous week, echoing in my sleep-deprived head. It played on and on, with the urgency of a prayer, until I finally got up and went for morning mass.
At church, I chanced upon a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary, when I heard a gentle voice saying to me “Consecrate this year, 2015 to me – The Immaculate Heart of Mary“.
I put this incident into a box and shelved it in the back of my mind, until a few months later when I randomly happened to google the phrase ‘Sacred Heart of Mary’. For those who know, of course there is no such thing! So, I looked for ‘Immaculate Heart of Mary‘ instead.
There she was, in her quiet, resplendent glory; the Immaculate Heart of Mary. That voice I had heard, was Mary’s voice and it was right (of course!). To say I was shocked to see this is an understatement. I can hear that quiet, insistent voice ringing in my ears even today. The ground gave way under me and time stood still.
This wasn’t my only strange and wonderful brush with the Immaculate Heart of Mary that year. Through the course of the year, I remember staying back by chance once, after a mass where people suddenly began reciting the novena to the Immaculate Heart. Another time I found out how she’s called the Spouse of the Holy Spirit (he’s a particular favourite of mine). Then there was the time I felt called to pray for priests and finding out that she holds a special place for them in her heart, the Immaculate Heart of Mary was a wonderful comfort during what was one of the most eventful years of my life.
And this is where I expected my story to end. At this point, my article originally came to a full stop. Until…
Year 2016: Totally eclipsed by the Heart
In a country far away, lives a dear friend of mine who’s one of the Chief Coincidence Keepers of my life. At mass one day she heard the priest talk about the Immaculate heart of Mary and among the many things he said that day, he mentioned that the month of August is dedicated to Our Lady’s Immaculate heart. Of course she wasted no time in telling me this, mostly because August is my birthday month. (Dun dun dun!)
Where do we go from here?
In writing this, I’ve come to realise that, this story is much bigger than me. We’re living in a turbulent time in world history and today, a devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is more relevant than ever. It has been the spiritual force behind the downfall of Communism in Russia, the maternal hand behind the miracle that gave St. Pope John Paul II a new lease of life and in 2013, Pope Francis consecrated the world to Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart, according to her wish.
Just like she did 100 years ago, to those little shepherd children at the foothills of Fatima, Portugal, Our Lady is urging each one of us to consecrate ourselves to her Immaculate Heart. And in her request, is a promise…
Don’t lose heart, I will never forsake you. My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God
– Our Lady of Fatima, speaking to Lucia Santos
As we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Fatima today, let’s consecrate ourselves to her Immaculate Heart.
