“by your endurance you will gain your life.” (luke 21:19)
Dear brothers and sisters,
I am William Gatchuessi, full time missionary for CFC India. Through this testimony, I would like to share about endurance, which has been a part of my life until now. To begin with, I will speak about perseverance and why one needs to persevere, after which I would like to speak about how one can persevere and reap the fruit of perseverance.
What is perseverance?
Jesus said to the disciple,
“I am going to send you what my father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from high.” (Luke 24:49).
Perseverance is our determination, our endurance to receive what is reserved for us; it is our participation in God’s action in our own life. It is the way to say no to devil and say yes to God as stated clearly in Hebrews 12:1,
“therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us”.
Perseverance goes together with sacrifice and we cannot take one without other; this sacrifice brings joy at the end; for it attests and confirms our ability and our capability to do something worthy.
Why we should persevere?
I remember when I got my baccalaureate, my father told me that he would not continue to support my studies and I should stop my education.
My desire at that moment was to study engineering and I decided to start studying even without the support of my parents. The day that I left the familial house, I had tears in my eyes as I knew that I was not going to receive any financial help from my family, but I had faith in my God.
If we ask any great man on this earth how he reached his goal, he would say that it was not easy but through endurance he was able to overcome all obstacles.
Through the New Testament it is very clear to see all the efforts, steadfastness and sacrifices of our master Jesus to build the kingdom of God.
- Matthew 8:20: “Jesus replied, foxes have holes and birds of the nests, but the son of man has no place to lay his head.”
- Luke 4:43 “but he said to them: I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.”
- John 11:8 “But Rabbi they said, a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?”
- John 18:11 “Jesus commanded Peter, put your sword away, shall I not drink the cup the father has given to me?”
When we persevere we are not doing something new, but just follow the footstep of Christ. We are trying just to say to Jesus:
“my God I want to be where you are”; as Jesus himself said “whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be”. (John 12:26).
If today we have the opportunity to hear the Word of God and come to know Christ it because many, such as the apostles, disciples, missionaries have sacrificed and have persevered.
Perseverance is the opportunity through which our life can be fruitful for others; it is a way to be a pleasing sacrifice to God. Perseverance is the attitude for those who want to conquer the world like Jesus:
“in this world you will have trouble. But take heart ! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33).
We should persevere for we are not alone in our battle but with the one who overcame the world,
“and surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
We should pray sincerely, not for the easy life but for the strength to endure the strong one.
See you soon for the next part!
